DisAbility Studies

Featured

DisAbility Studies constitute a young, developing field of research that affects almost all academic disciplines. We analyse phenomena of disability and impairment, with a focus on social dynamics and practices. We start from the basic assumption that disability is subject to both cultural and historical change. It is therefore the result of constructions and attributions embedded in a specific historical period and culture. Methodologically, disability can only be understood in relation to ability. Hence, it is crucial to ask who is regarded to be able or unable to do something in certain contexts.

The research group DisAbility Studies supported by the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna brings together Viennese scholars from different disciplines. They share their perspectives on DisAbility Studies and discuss their respective approaches. The research group aims to enable an open and interdisciplinary exchange. We are looking forward to welcoming new members.
